Step 1: Prepare and file the Petition for Divorce and other required documents

Printer-friendly version

The documents you generally need to start the divorce process using a Petition for Divorce are:

  • the Petition for Divorce
  • the Statement of Contact Information and Circumstances
  • your Personal Representation Form (if you are filing on your own, without a lawyer)
  • the long-form marriage certificate
    • the long-form marriage certificate doesn’t have to be filed right away, but it should be filed as soon as possible. The divorce cannot be processed without this document.

You have to file these documents with the court and have them formally issued by the court before arranging to have them served on the respondent.
